DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
Love Bound challenges societal norms, exploring where the line between love and obsession lies, and how mental health shapes our most intimate desires. The film also explores the immutable bond between men and women even as relationships and marriages are under the strain of seismic and evolving political, cultural, and economic changes.
These colossal shifts have resulted in mass confusion and a world of impenetrable loneliness for millions. For those suffering from mental illness, the consequences can be deadly. Love Bound is set against this reality. While numerous comedies have poked fun at the challenges of modern dating, no film has dared to take this topic seriously. For me, however, this topic is of grave seriousness.
Four years ago, I lost my best friend Rick, a man afflicted with mental illness who was also the most generous spirit you could imagine. He took his own life after a devastating breakup with his girlfriend. After his breakup, he spiraled ever downward and could not climb out of the abyss. Nothing could bring him back, no matter how much his family and friends tried to console and encourage him. The tragedy also hammered home for me the agony that millions of people struggling with mental illness face in silence every day.
Diving deep into the darkness, Love Bound sheds light on what men and women want from each other and why what they want seems so elusive today. It is ultimately a story of hope and redemption. My aspiration for this film is to raise awareness about mental illness and help reduce the stigma surrounding it. This is what is needed to end the silence and to increase funding for medical research that will prevent tragedies like Rick’s.
